TI-2026-004 โ Google Cloud โ Persistent OS Fingerprinting Campaign
AS396982 ยท 31 GCP instances conducting coordinated credential stuffing and OS fingerprinting for vulnerability intelligence
๐ Executive Summary
A fleet of 31 Google Cloud Platform instances spanning 5+ regions worldwide
has generated 4,208 attack events against our honeypot. The primary scanner
(34.132.194.42) alone accounts for 1,287 events (31% of all GCP attacks)
and is confirmed MALICIOUS by GreyNoise as of today (2026-04-26).
This is not a brute-force compromise operation โ it's an IoT/server inventory operation.
After every successful login, the bot executes a single command (uname -s -v -n -r -m)
to extract OS name, kernel version, hostname, and CPU architecture. Combined with SSH host key
collection via Nmap-SSH2-Hostkey, the operator is building a database of
"this IP runs Linux [version] on [arch] with [kernel] โ here are the CVEs that apply."
This intelligence is sold on underground markets or used by APT groups to match exploits to specific targets.

๐ง SSH Client Fingerprints from GCP Network
| SSH Client String | Connections | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
SSH-2.0-libssh_0.11.1 | 435 | Bulk scanner โ primary automated tool |
SSH-2.0-Go | 276 | Go-based scanner โ secondary toolchain |
SSH-2.0-libssh_0.12.0 | 77 | Latest libssh โ primary scanner's client |
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.4 | 17 | Legacy client โ manual/fallback access |
SSH-2.0-Nmap-SSH2-Hostkey | 6 | NMAP HOST KEY COLLECTION! |
Nmap-SSH2-Hostkey client is especially significant โ it's specifically designed to collect SSH host keys for fingerprinting infrastructure. Combined with the uname data, the operator now has: IP address + OS version + kernel version + CPU architecture + SSH host key fingerprint. This is a complete target profile for vulnerability matching.

๐ง Comprehensive Analysis
Threat Classification: Commercial Vulnerability Intelligence Operation
This is an IoT/server inventory operation. The uname output reveals: OS name, kernel version, hostname, and machine architecture. Combined with the SSH host key collection (Nmap-SSH2-Hostkey), the operator is building a database of: "this IP runs Linux [version] on [arch] with [kernel] โ here are the CVEs that apply."
Using Google Cloud is strategically deliberate: GCP IP reputation is clean, many firewalls whitelist Google ranges, and GCP's abuse response is notoriously slow for ephemeral VMs. The operator creates instances, scans a batch of targets, destroys the VMs, and repeats โ making retroactive investigation difficult.
The repetition of uname 10+ times per session serves a dual purpose: honeypot detection (real systems always return identical output; some honeypots randomize responses between sessions) and reliability validation (ensuring the data collected is consistent and trustworthy).
The multi-region deployment across Taiwan, US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific is designed to: (1) evade geographic blocking rules, (2) bypass per-region API rate limits, and (3) appear as distributed legitimate traffic rather than a centralized scanning operation. The 125-event pattern across many IPs confirms batched, rate-limited scanning โ a hallmark of professional reconnaissance infrastructure.
๐ก๏ธ Our Defense Response
mikrotik-attack list.uname output. Scanner believes it's collecting real data โ but it's our decoy signature.๐ Final Assessment
This data is sold on underground markets or used by APT groups to match exploits to specific targets. A database entry might read: "IP 203.0.113.45 โ Linux 5.15.0-91-generic x86_64 โ vulnerable to CVE-2024-XXXX, CVE-2025-YYYY." The buyer then deploys pre-built exploits against confirmed-vulnerable targets.
The $1,500+/month cloud spend, multi-region deployment, professional libssh tooling, and GreyNoise-confirmed malicious classification all point to a commercially motivated vulnerability intelligence operation โ not a hobbyist or researcher.
