๐ฎ๐ฉ TI-2026-058L: The Indonesian Amplifier
Series: The Operators | Letter L: Why Indonesian Infrastructure Hits 11.4ร Per IP While Others Average 3.9
Inside the compromised ISP nodes and Chinese-operated cloud instances turning Southeast Asia's largest archipelago into an attack amplification platform.
The Anomaly
In our honeypot's 102-day observation window, Indonesia presents a statistical outlier that demands explanation. While most countries contribute a handful of hits per IP โ scanning, probing, moving on โ Indonesian infrastructure persists. It comes back. Again and again.
๐ Indonesia by the Numbers
| Metric | Indonesia | Global Average | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total IPs observed | 48 | โ | โ |
| Total honeypot hits | 459 | โ | โ |
| Average hits per IP | 9.56 | ~3.2 | 3.0ร |
| Top IP hits (210.210.155.71) | 84 | โ | โ |
| BytePlus Indonesia hits/IP | 11.4 | 3.9 (BytePlus SG) | 2.9ร |
| BytePlus Hong Kong hits/IP | 31.3 | 3.9 (BytePlus SG) | 8.0ร |
The same cloud provider (BytePlus), the same ASN (150436) โ but Indonesian and Hong Kong nodes attack 3-8ร more aggressively than their Singapore siblings. The infrastructure isn't different. The operators using it are different.
The Three Amplification Layers
Layer 1: The Compromised ISP Nodes
๐ฆ 210.210.155.71 โ The Worm Host
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| ISP | PT Cyberindo Aditama (CBN) โ Indonesian cable TV + internet |
| ASN | 4787 |
| Honeypot hits | 84 (highest of all Indonesian IPs) |
| Campaign | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 (libssh2 1.11.0 โ the WORM) |
| Actor Cluster | actor-0d9fdff8bb3d (THE 269-node MDRFCKR cluster) |
| Credential Pattern | root:(empty) ร 155 attempts |
| Active Period | 2026-05-21 โ 2026-06-15 (26 days continuous) |
This is not a scanner. This is a worm propagation node โ a compromised Indonesian residential connection conscripted into the mdrfckr botnet. It hammers our honeypot with empty-password root attempts: the classic IoT/embedded device propagation technique. 155 login attempts from a single IP over 26 days. The machine's owner almost certainly doesn't know.
๐ก 36.92.140.209 โ The Telkom Scanner
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| ISP | PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) โ state-owned telco, 170M+ subscribers |
| ASN | 7713 (telkomnet-as-ap) |
| Honeypot hits | 42 |
| Campaign | hassh-af8223ac9914f509 (libssh 0.12.0) |
| Credentials | ubuntu:1100, root:123456.w, msf:msf@123, admin:P@ssw0rd123!, postgresql:123456 |
A Telkom Indonesia subscriber running the libssh 0.12.0 scanner. The credentials reveal targeting: "msf" (Metasploit), "postgresql" (databases), "ubuntu" (cloud instances). This isn't IoT brute-forcing โ this is systematic service enumeration from a compromised Telkom connection. Indonesia's state telco, unwitting infrastructure provider to the enterprise.
7 of 48 Indonesian IPs are on Telkom (ASN 7713) โ Indonesia's largest ISP, serving residential and business customers. These are likely compromised routers, NAS devices, or poorly-secured VPS instances rented by Indonesian small businesses.
Layer 2: The ByteDance Platform
๐ต 163.7.8.79 โ The TikTok Cloud Attacker
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Cloud Provider | BytePlus Pte. Ltd. (ByteDance's enterprise cloud division) |
| ASN | 150436 (BYTEPLUS-AS-AP) |
| Honeypot hits | 46 |
| Campaigns | THREE: libssh 0.11.x + libssh 0.12.0 + libssh 0.9.6 |
| Active period | 2026-05-21 โ 2026-06-16 (27 days) |
| Credentials used | 20 unique pairs |
๐จ๐ณ The Chinese Vocabulary on TikTok's Cloud
| Username:Password | Decoded Meaning | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| root:zhihu | ็ฅไน โ Chinese Q&A platform (like Quora) | Chinese cultural reference |
| ningbo:123456 | ๅฎๆณข โ Major Chinese port city (Zhejiang) | Chinese geographic knowledge |
| root:dongshizhang | ่ฃไบ้ฟ โ "Chairman of the Board" | Chinese corporate title |
| chi:chi | ๅ โ "to eat" / could be person name | Chinese vocabulary |
| root:pubg | PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (game) | Gaming community targeting |
| etcd:etcd123 | Kubernetes key-value store | Cloud infrastructure targeting |
| clouduser:123456 | Generic cloud instance default | Cloud targeting |
| squid:squid | HTTP proxy server | Proxy infrastructure hunting |
The credential vocabulary is unmistakably Mainland Chinese. "Dongshizhang" (่ฃไบ้ฟ) is not a word a non-Chinese speaker would ever use as a password guess. "Zhihu" (็ฅไน) requires knowledge of Chinese internet culture. "Ningbo" (ๅฎๆณข) requires Chinese geographic literacy. A Chinese operator is running attack scanners on ByteDance's own cloud platform.
๐๏ธ BytePlus ASN 150436 โ The Full Picture
| Metric | Singapore | Indonesia | Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPs observed | 34 | 14 | 3 |
| Total hits | 133 | 160 | 94 |
| Hits per IP | 3.9 | 11.4 | 31.3 |
| Interpretation | Light scanning | Persistent attack | Concentrated assault |
Total BytePlus malicious activity: 51 IPs, 387 attempts, 6 successful logins.
BytePlus allocated ASN in November 2022. By mid-2026, it hosts 51 known attack IPs. The operator abuses Indonesian and Hong Kong regions more aggressively because those jurisdictions have slower abuse response times than Singapore's strict hosting policies.
Layer 3: The Multi-Tool Arsenal
What makes the Indonesian amplification unique is the tool diversity deployed from a single region:
| Campaign | Tool | Indonesian IPs | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| hassh-03a80b21afa81068 | libssh 0.11.x | Multiple | Worm (scanner generation) |
| hassh-af8223ac9914f509 | libssh 0.12.0 | Multiple | Scanner (latest version) |
| hassh-f555226df1963d1d | libssh 0.9.6 | Multiple | Botnet (legacy brute force) |
| hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 | libssh2 1.11.0 | 210.210.155.71 | Worm propagation |
| hassh-16443846184eafde | Go_SSH | 1 IP | Command scanner |
Five different SSH client fingerprints from a single country. Indonesia isn't hosting one campaign โ it's hosting all of them simultaneously. This is what amplification looks like: a single geographic region serving as a convergence point for the entire enterprise's tool portfolio.
The TikkerAI Connection
๐ค Passive DNS: tikkerai.com on BytePlus
Certificate transparency and passive DNS reveal tikkerai.com hosted on BytePlus IP 150.5.128.67:
api.tikkerai.comโ API endpointadmin.tikkerai.comโ Admin panelcdn.tikkerai.comโ Content deliverytest.tikkerai.comโ Test environment- 22 SSL certificates issued
Also on the same ASN: business-asia.ltd (IP 150.5.169.138, same prefix as a 46-hit attacker).
The same cloud infrastructure hosting AI services and legitimate business domains is simultaneously hosting the SSH attack fleet. The attackers choose BytePlus specifically because it provides geographic diversity (SG, ID, HK) under a single account, with the legitimacy shield of TikTok's parent company.
Why Indonesia?
The amplification effect has structural causes:
๐ Infrastructure Factors
- Scale without oversight: Telkom alone has 170M+ subscribers. Abuse reports disappear into bureaucratic queues. Response time measured in weeks, not hours.
- Legacy hardware: Indonesian ISPs serve millions of SOHO routers with default credentials, creating a perpetually-renewable pool of compromisable nodes.
- Cloud arbitrage: BytePlus Jakarta region costs less than Singapore, with fewer abuse monitoring resources. Chinese operators specifically target ID and HK regions for persistence.
- Worm propagation geography: Once one Indonesian node is compromised (210.210.155.71), it scans the local /16 subnet. Indonesian subnets are dense with vulnerable devices. One infection becomes ten.
- Time zone coverage: Indonesian infrastructure provides UTC+7 coverage, filling the gap between European and East Asian operational hours.
The SSH Key Injection
Among the shared commands from BytePlus infrastructure, one stands out:
This is persistence establishment. After successful login (6 confirmed successes on BytePlus alone), the attacker:
- Deletes existing SSH keys (
rm -rf .ssh) - Injects their own public key
- Removes immutable attributes (
chattr -ia) to prevent lockout - The compromised host becomes a permanent staging node
This is how the amplification cycle perpetuates: compromise โ inject key โ use as scanner โ compromise more hosts โ repeat. Indonesia's network topology (dense, under-monitored, cheap) makes it the perfect amplification medium.
The Shared Credential Network
Across BytePlus's 51 attack IPs, 15 credential pairs are shared between multiple IPs:
| Username:Password | IPs Using It | Target Type |
|---|---|---|
| socks:socks | 7 | SOCKS proxy servers |
| root:Zz123456. | 6 | General root access |
| ubuntu:P@ssw0rd1234 | 5 | Cloud instances (Ubuntu) |
| root:a.123456 | 5 | General root access |
| user:123!@#qweQWE | 5 | Application users |
Seven IPs sharing "socks:socks" โ they're hunting for proxy infrastructure. The enterprise doesn't just want to compromise hosts; it wants to compromise proxies that it can chain for further anonymization. Every compromised SOCKS proxy becomes another layer in the jurisdictional maze documented in 058K.
The Verdict
๐ฏ Amplification Analysis
Indonesia serves as a triple-purpose amplification platform for the SSH attack enterprise:
- Worm propagation medium: Dense residential networks (Telkom, CBN) with legacy hardware provide endless compromisable nodes. Once infected, these nodes scan locally and propagate โ generating the 84-hit pattern from 210.210.155.71.
- Chinese cloud proxy: BytePlus (ByteDance/TikTok cloud) Jakarta region provides Chinese operators with cheap, geographically diverse infrastructure. The operators deploy all five scanner variants simultaneously, using Chinese credential dictionaries (zhihu, ningbo, dongshizhang) that reveal their nationality.
- Proxy harvesting ground: 7 of 51 BytePlus IPs share the "socks:socks" credential โ hunting for proxy servers to add to their anonymization chain. Indonesian proxies provide an additional geographic hop that complicates any trace-back.
The amplification isn't Indonesian. Indonesia is the substrate, not the operator. The operators are Chinese (proven by credential vocabulary), using ByteDance's own cloud platform, compromising Indonesian ISP customers as propagation nodes, and harvesting Indonesian proxies for operational security. Indonesia doesn't attack โ Indonesia is used.
Read Between the Lines
ByteDance operates TikTok โ used by 1.5 billion people. BytePlus is their enterprise cloud division. On that same cloud infrastructure, Chinese-speaking threat actors run SSH brute-force scanners with credentials like "่ฃไบ้ฟ" (Chairman of the Board). The abuse contact is bd_abuse@bytedance.com. One wonders how many reports have been sent to that address. One wonders how many have been actioned.
PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia is 52% state-owned. Seven of its IP addresses in our dataset are actively participating in a global SSH attack campaign. The Indonesian government โ through its state telco โ is an unwitting infrastructure provider to transnational cybercrime. Not through negligence of policy, but through the structural impossibility of monitoring 170 million subscribers for compromise indicators they were never designed to detect.
210.210.155.71 attempted to log into our honeypot 155 times over 26 days. Every 4 hours, on average. The machine that owns that IP โ likely a router or NAS in someone's apartment in Jakarta โ is a zombie. Its owner pays their internet bill every month. They watch Netflix. They have no idea their connection is part of a 269-node international worm cluster. This is the human cost of amplification: not the victims of the attack, but the unknowing participants.
