๐Ÿ“‹ Executive Summary

This investigation uncovered two distinct but related SSH worm families operating in Marchโ€“April 2026. Family 1 is a sophisticated anti-forensics worm propagating through 3 compromised residential devices across the Netherlands, USA, and Sweden โ€” all running 11-year-old OpenSSH servers on embedded hardware. Family 2 is a bash-history-stealing worm using a hardcoded GUID session tag, operating through 11 IPs belonging to a deliberately opaque corporate structure: Netprotect, Inc. and Strong Technology, LLC โ€” two companies that are actually one, operating through virtual offices 1 mile apart in Manhattan.

The corporate discovery is the most significant finding: Netprotect's abuse contact is abuse@strongtechnology.net, their RIPE admin is literally named "Strong Technology IP Admin", and both use the same NETPROTECT-MNT RIPE maintainer. This is proxy/anonymization infrastructure masquerading as two separate companies โ€” a pattern commonly seen in bulletproof hosting and commercial proxy-as-a-service operations.

๐Ÿ”ฌ PART A: The Anti-Forensics Worm (Family 1)

3 compromised residential devices, 3 countries, attacked within 2 minutes of each other on March 25, 2026:

๐Ÿšฉ Critical Finding: ALL THREE run OpenSSH 6.7p2 as their server โ€” a version from January 2015. These are NOT regular computers. They are compromised NAS devices, old routers, or embedded Linux systems that haven't been updated in 11 years.

โฑ๏ธ Attack Timeline โ€” March 25, 2026

05:54:55 โ”‚ ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ NL IP executes anti-forensics + honeypot detection (3 attempts, 17s intervals)
05:55:57 โ”‚ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US IP (204.111.121.226) executes identical sequence

๐ŸŽฏ The 7-Step Attack Sequence (Identical Across All 3 IPs)

Credential: ubuntu:ubuntu (3/4 attempts successful). SSH client: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.4p1 Debian-10+deb9u6 = Debian 9 "Stretch" (EOL June 2022):

STEP 1 โ”‚ export HISTFILE=/dev/null โ† Disable bash history file
STEP 2 โ”‚ export HISTSAVE=/dev/null โ† Disable history save (covers sh variants)
STEP 3 โ”‚ unset HISTFILE โ† Belt and suspenders โ€” double disable
STEP 4 โ”‚ unset HISTSAVE โ† Quadruple coverage
STEP 5 โ”‚ (empty line) โ† Prompt test / timing delay
STEP 6 โ”‚ if ! type export >/dev/null 2>&1; then โ† HONEYPOT DETECTION
STEP 7 โ”‚ echo "ERROR: BADtype: export" โ† If export doesn't exist โ†’ honeypot
       โ”‚ exit โ† Abort mission

๐Ÿง  Worm Family 1 โ€” Analysis

The 4-step history wipe (HISTFILE + HISTSAVE ร— export + unset) is overkill by design โ€” it covers bash, sh, dash, and custom shell variants. This is a mature worm that has been refined through testing against multiple shell environments.

The honeypot detection is clever: type export checks if export is a real shell builtin. Older Cowrie versions didn't implement it. Our Cowrie did โ€” the worm ran the detection but Cowrie passed the test. The worm likely aborted due to other behavioral checks further in the pipeline that we didn't trigger (the honeypot detection is step 1 of a multi-stage verification).

The initial /home/localtest string sent as SSH version identifier is a connection probe โ€” it checks if the SSH service is real before deploying the actual client. The SSH client string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.4p1 Debian-10+deb9u6 reveals the worm toolkit was compiled on Debian 9 "Stretch" (EOL June 2022).

The 1-minute spacing between the NL โ†’ US โ†’ SE attacks indicates C2-directed sequential targeting, not independent propagation. The worm detected our honeypot but couldn't confirm โ€” it ran the detection, Cowrie passed, but the payload never arrived. This suggests additional verification steps beyond what we captured.

๐Ÿ”ฌ PART B: The GUID History-Stealing Worm (Family 2)

Connected campaign discovered during investigation. 11 IPs, all on April 1, 2026, using a hardcoded GUID session tag across a deliberately opaque corporate infrastructure.

๐ŸŽฏ The GUID History-Stealing Sequence

SSH client: SSH-2.0-libssh2_1.11.1 (identical across ALL 11 IPs). Credential: root:root (always successful).

STEP 1 โ”‚ echo $SHELL โ† Detect shell type
STEP 2 โ”‚ HISTZISE=10000; HISTFILE=~/.bash_history; โ† Note: HISTZISE is MISSPELLED
       โ”‚ HISTTIMEFORMAT=' d2ae636d-7d32-4072-a7aa-   (should be HISTSIZE)
       โ”‚ 3a885d8bdd32 '; history -r $HISTFILE; history โ† STEAL bash history with GUID tag
๐Ÿ’ก Key Insight: This is NOT anti-forensics โ€” it's the OPPOSITE. The worm is READING the victim's bash history to steal information. The GUID in HISTTIMEFORMAT is a session tag so the C2 server can correlate stolen history data with the specific operation. The misspelled HISTZISE (should be HISTSIZE) is a developer error frozen in the worm code โ€” a unique fingerprint for attribution.

๐Ÿ‘ค The Primary Node (176.67.80.217) โ€” Human Operator Detected

The first session from this IP (16:23โ€“16:24) included manual exploration before the bot took over:

16:23:01 โ”‚ list โ† Not a Linux command (Windows habit?)
16:23:04 โ”‚ lp โ† Checking for printers?
16:23:08 โ”‚ ls โ† Now using Linux commands
16:23:12 โ”‚ htop โ† Wants system monitor
16:23:18 โ”‚ apt isntal lhtop โ† TYPO: "install" misspelled โ€” human typing
16:23:25 โ”‚ top โ† Fallback after htop not found
16:23:31 โ”‚ ls / โ† Filesystem exploration
16:23:38 โ”‚ apt update โ† Trying to install packages
16:23:45 โ”‚ whoami โ† Identity check
16:23:52 โ”‚ df -h โ† Disk space
16:24:01 โ”‚ du -sh * โ† Directory sizes

After this manual session, the bot took over: 37 automated sessions at exactly 3:06-minute intervals from 16:23 to 18:47 (2.5 hours), each running only echo $SHELL + the GUID history command. The human tested the system, then engaged the automated loop.

๐Ÿ” Attribution Fingerprints

1. HISTZISE Typo
Developer error in worm code โ€” should be HISTSIZE. Frozen in the binary, unique fingerprint.
2. GUID Tag
d2ae636d-7d32-4072-a7aa-3a885d8bdd32 โ€” C2 operation identifier, unique to this campaign.
3. "list" Command
Windows user writing Linux malware? list is a Windows/DOS habit, not Unix.
4. "apt isntal" Typo
Human speed-typing error. Confirms manual interaction before bot handoff.
5. libssh2 1.11.1
Specific compiled version โ€” consistent across all 11 nodes. Same build of the worm.
6. 3:06-min Interval
Hardcoded sleep or cron. Precisely 186 seconds between polling cycles.
7. BitTorrent on 176.67.80.31
Shodan shows port 6881 open (BitTorrent) โ€” suggests file sharing infrastructure co-located with the proxy network. Possible malware distribution channel.

๐Ÿง  Combined Analysis โ€” Both Worm Families

Threat Classification: Coordinated Worm Campaign with Corporate Shell Infrastructure

Family 1 (Anti-Forensics) targets residential embedded devices with ancient firmware โ€” NAS boxes, old routers, and IoT devices running OpenSSH 6.7p2 (2015). The worm's OPSEC is sophisticated: 4-layer history wipe, honeypot detection via shell builtin testing, and connection probing before deploying the real SSH client. These compromised residential devices provide clean IP reputation for further attacks.

Family 2 (GUID History Stealer) operates through commercial proxy/anonymization infrastructure disguised as two separate companies. The corporate structure is deliberately opaque: Netprotect Inc. and Strong Technology LLC share abuse contacts, RIPE maintainers, admin roles, and operate from virtual offices 1 mile apart in Manhattan. This is proxy-as-a-service infrastructure โ€” whether the companies knowingly facilitate malware operations or are themselves compromised is an open question.

The history-stealing operation is unusual โ€” most worms disable history, this one reads it. Stolen bash history can reveal: internal hostnames, database connection strings, API keys accidentally typed, SSH destinations, system administration patterns, and more. Combined with the GUID tag for C2 correlation, this is targeted intelligence collection.

The human operator evidence (Windows list command, apt isntal typo) suggests a Windows-native developer who is less fluent in Linux โ€” possibly someone who develops the worm toolkit on Windows and deploys it on compromised Linux infrastructure. The 3:06-minute polling interval is suspiciously precise โ€” likely a hardcoded sleep(186) or a cron job with custom scheduling.
