1. The Global Map โ€” 81 Machines, 29 Countries, Zero Consent

The mdrfckr botnet doesn't own infrastructure. It borrows it โ€” from telecoms, cloud providers, ISPs, universities, and government networks across 29 countries. Every machine in this network was somebody's server, somebody's VPS, somebody's project. Now it's a node in a cryptomining operation run by people who didn't build it, don't maintain it, and don't pay for it.

What follows is the complete mapping of 81 compromised machines that attacked our honeypot between March and June 2026. Each one is simultaneously a victim of the botnet and an attacker in its service. This is the parasite's defining trick: every infection creates a new weapon.

Pattern Analysis

Asia-Pacific dominance: 38 IPs (47%) โ€” driven by South Korea's broadband, Indonesia's ISPs, Singapore's cloud, Hong Kong's hosting, and Vietnam's telcos
Americas: 21 IPs (26%) โ€” US cloud providers (Microsoft, DigitalOcean, Google, Oracle) + Latin American telcos (Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Peru)
Europe + Africa: 13 IPs (16%) โ€” scattered across telcos and budget hosters
Middle East + Central Asia: 3 IPs (4%) โ€” national telecoms (UAE, Egypt, Kazakhstan)

3. The Cloud Giant Problem โ€” Microsoft, DigitalOcean, Tencent, Google, Oracle

Six machines belong to Microsoft Azure. Six to DigitalOcean. Three to Tencent Cloud. Two to Oracle Cloud. One to Google Cloud. That's 18 machines โ€” 22% of the botnet โ€” running on the world's largest cloud platforms.

โ˜๏ธ Microsoft Corporation (AS8075) โ€” 6 machines, 6 countries

IPs: 74.243.239.219 (AE), 4.182.219.135 (DE), 172.208.48.177 (GB), 20.193.141.133 (IN), 172.211.56.214 (NL), 52.177.169.196 (US), 4.157.250.195 (US)
Avg Threat Score: 60 ยท GreyNoise Flagged: 2/6 as malicious
Implication: Azure VMs deployed with weak credentials across multiple regions. Microsoft's automated abuse detection did not remove them during our 24-day observation window.

๐ŸŒŠ DigitalOcean (AS14061) โ€” 6 machines, 3 countries

IPs: 188.226.168.173 (NL), 68.183.236.1 (SG), 209.97.168.111 (SG), 159.223.94.92 (SG), 167.172.133.85 (US), 143.198.235.14 (US)
Avg Threat Score: 54 ยท Abuse Score: 85-100%
Implication: DigitalOcean's $5/month droplets are the botnet's disposable foot soldiers. Easy to deploy, easy to abandon, cheap enough that victims may not notice the CPU spike on their bills.

๐Ÿง Tencent Cloud / AceVille (AS132203) โ€” 3 machines

IPs: 43.133.60.217 (SG), 43.153.41.82 (US), 170.106.82.79 (US)
RDAP Org: "IRT-ACEVILLEPTELTD-SG" / "ACEVILLE PTELTD administrator"
Avg Threat Score: 50 ยท GreyNoise: 1 flagged as malicious
Implication: AceVille Pte Ltd is Tencent Cloud's international arm. These are Chinese cloud instances deployed in Singapore and US regions โ€” the botnet reaches into Beijing's cloud ecosystem.

๐ŸŸ  BytePlus / TikTok (AS150436) โ€” 2 machines

IPs: 101.47.156.170 (SG), 101.47.159.125 (SG)
Avg Threat Score: 52 ยท Abuse Score: 100%
Implication: BytePlus is ByteDance's (TikTok's parent) enterprise cloud platform. Two of their Singapore instances are infected and actively propagating the mdrfckr botnet. This means TikTok's parent company's infrastructure is โ€” perhaps unknowingly โ€” participating in cryptojacking.

โ˜๏ธ Oracle Cloud (AS31898) โ€” 2 machines

IPs: 69.6.251.43 (BR), 150.136.129.10 (US)
Avg Threat Score: 82 ยท Abuse Score: 100%
Implication: Oracle's "Always Free Tier" instances are popular targets โ€” users create them, forget them, and leave default credentials active indefinitely. One is in Brazil (formerly Newfold Digital), one in Oracle's US public cloud.

๐Ÿ”ต Google Cloud Platform (AS396982) โ€” 1 machine

IP: 35.237.94.18 (US)
Threat Score: 60 ยท Honeypot Hits: 6
Implication: Even Google's cloud, with its aggressive security defaults, has at least one compromised instance participating in the botnet.
๐ŸŽญ The Uncomfortable Economics

Cloud providers bill by CPU usage. An infected machine running XMRig at 100% CPU generates maximum billing revenue for the cloud provider. A $5/month DigitalOcean droplet consuming full CPU generates more revenue-per-resource for DigitalOcean than a barely-used instance. There is no financial incentive for cloud providers to detect and terminate cryptomining malware promptly. In fact, they lose revenue when they do. This isn't conspiracy โ€” it's structural misalignment. The abuse department is a cost center fighting against the revenue department's interests.

4. The Telecom Problem โ€” National Networks Turned Botnet Nodes

While cloud providers host disposable VPS instances, the other half of the botnet lives on national telecom networks โ€” ISPs serving millions of residential and business customers. These are not servers someone rented. These are routers, NAS devices, IoT equipment, and forgotten Linux boxes on home and business networks.

5. The Top Ten โ€” Most Dangerous Nodes

Not all botnet nodes are equal. Some are freshly infected machines that made a single scan attempt. Others are veteran nodes โ€” active for weeks, scanning constantly, accumulating abuse reports from hundreds of sources. These are the top ten:

The MTN Nigeria Node โ€” 102.88.137.80

This single IP generated 128 honeypot hits โ€” more than any other node in the entire botnet. It runs on MTN Nigeria's mobile broadband network (Africa's largest telecom, 289M subscribers). With a threat score of 99/100 and AbuseIPDB confidence of 100%, this machine has been reported by dozens of organizations. It is still active. MTN has not terminated it. It has been scanning continuously for weeks. This one compromised device on a Nigerian mobile network generates more attack traffic than entire cloud provider deployments.

6. Cross-References โ€” Where These IPs Appear Elsewhere

Several of these 81 IPs appear in our other investigations, revealing that the mdrfckr botnet shares infrastructure with โ€” or has parasitized machines from โ€” other campaigns:

๐ŸŽญ The Convergence Pattern

The same infrastructure appears in multiple investigations because the same hosting ecosystem serves multiple criminal operations. Yisu Cloud hosts Phantom ASN operators AND mdrfckr nodes. Tencent/AceVille infrastructure appears in VPN laundering AND cryptojacking. FranTech hosts botnet C2 AND extremist content platforms. This isn't coincidence โ€” these are abuse-tolerant ecosystems where multiple criminal operations coexist because the hosting provider's business model depends on not looking too closely. The mdrfckr botnet doesn't need bulletproof hosting for its scanners (those are on victim machines), but its C2 needs to survive. And it has, at FranTech, for eight years.

7. The Yisu Cloud Connection โ€” Hong Kong's Bulletproof Shadow

Two of the most dangerous nodes in the botnet (threat scores 98 and 62) belong to Yisu Cloud Ltd (AS142403) โ€” the same Hong Kong-registered hosting provider we documented extensively in the TI-2026-026 Phantom ASN series as a bulletproof hosting nexus.

Yisu Cloud Nodes

154.209.4.195 โ€” Threat 98, 64 honeypot hits, GreyNoise: malicious. RDAP: "Cloud Innovation Support"
103.146.159.173 โ€” Threat 62, 1 hit. RDAP: "HK KXSY TECHNOLOGY CO.,LIMITED"

Yisu Cloud appears across multiple investigations. It is registered in Hong Kong but operates Chinese-origin infrastructure globally. The entity "HK KXSY TECHNOLOGY CO.,LIMITED" is a shell company sub-allocating IP space from Yisu โ€” typical of bulletproof hosting where the actual operator is hidden behind layers of shell corporations.

The question: is Yisu Cloud knowingly hosting mdrfckr nodes, or are these compromised customer VPSes? Given Yisu's documented history of abuse tolerance (1,600+ abuse reports in 2025 alone per our Phantom ASN research), the distinction may be academic. The infrastructure exists in a gray zone where "we didn't know" is the business model.

8. The Education Network โ€” Tanzania's Research Institution

One IP stands out for what it represents: 41.93.28.9, belonging to the Tanzania Education and Research Network (TERNET, AS37182). This is not a commercial ISP or a cloud provider. This is a national academic institution โ€” the equivalent of a university research network.

TERNET Node

IP: 41.93.28.9
ASN: AS37182 โ€” Tanzania Education And Research Network
RDAP Contact: Magesa Mihayo
Threat Score: 63
GreyNoise: Confirmed malicious
Abuse Score: 100%

A machine on Tanzania's national education network is actively propagating the mdrfckr botnet. This means a server at a Tanzanian university or research institution โ€” funded by international development grants, meant to serve students and researchers โ€” is instead mining cryptocurrency for criminals. The RDAP contact "Magesa Mihayo" is likely a single overworked network administrator responsible for the entire institution's infrastructure.

๐ŸŽญ The Development Aid Angle

African research networks are typically funded by international organizations (World Bank, EU, USAID). They receive grants to build internet infrastructure for education. Those grants rarely include ongoing security budgets. The servers get deployed, the grant closes, the sysadmin moves on, and the default password stays "root/root" for years. The mdrfckr botnet doesn't just parasitize negligent cloud users โ€” it parasitizes international development failures. Every CPU cycle that machine spends mining Monero is a CPU cycle stolen from Tanzanian students' internet access.

9. The BytePlus Question โ€” TikTok's Parent in the Botnet

BytePlus (AS150436) is the enterprise cloud division of ByteDance โ€” the Chinese company that owns TikTok, Douyin, and a constellation of other apps serving 2 billion users. Two of their Singapore-region cloud instances are infected with mdrfckr and actively scanning the internet for new victims.

๐Ÿ“ฑ BytePlus Pte. Ltd. โ€” TikTok's Cloud Arm

Parent: ByteDance (valued at ~$300B)
IPs Compromised: 101.47.156.170, 101.47.159.125
Location: Singapore
Combined Threat Score: 52
Combined Hits: 5

BytePlus launched in 2021 as ByteDance's enterprise cloud platform, offering AI/ML services, CDN, and general compute. The two compromised instances are on the same /16 subnet (101.47.x.x), suggesting either a batch of VMs deployed together or a shared vulnerability in their provisioning system.

BytePlus is already under intense geopolitical scrutiny due to its Chinese ownership and data-handling practices. The fact that their infrastructure is participating in a botnet โ€” even unwittingly โ€” adds a layer: if BytePlus can't detect a mdrfckr infection on their own servers (one of the simplest, most well-documented botnets on earth), what does that say about their operational security for customer data?

10. The Chinese Cloud Ecosystem โ€” UCloud, Tencent, CognetCloud

Beyond BytePlus, three other Chinese-origin cloud providers host mdrfckr nodes. Together, Chinese cloud infrastructure accounts for 10 of 81 nodes (12%) โ€” a significant concentration for providers that collectively have a small fraction of the global cloud market.

๐ŸŽญ The Regulatory Arbitrage

Chinese cloud providers operating in Singapore and Hong Kong exist in a regulatory gap. They are not subject to Chinese domestic cybersecurity laws when serving international customers, and Singapore/HK regulators focus on data protection rather than abuse prevention. The result: Chinese-origin cloud infrastructure in Southeast Asia becomes a haven for operations that would be shut down on AWS or Azure within days. Not because the Chinese companies actively protect criminal customers โ€” but because their abuse response processes are slower, less automated, and often lack English-language intake. The mdrfckr botnet exploits this gap: 12% of its infrastructure runs on providers where abuse reports disappear into linguistic and jurisdictional voids.

11. The Laundering Layer โ€” PacketExchange in Estonia

One of the higher-threat nodes sits on 196.196.253.20 โ€” geolocated to Estonia but belonging to PacketExchange / Orion Network Limited (AS58065, registered in Great Britain). Threat score: 78. Honeypot hits: 28.

PacketExchange is a transit/hosting provider that has appeared in abuse databases for years. Their IP space uses African-region prefixes (196.x.x.x) routed through European infrastructure โ€” a common pattern in IP address laundering where geographically African IP ranges are actually hosted in European data centers to avoid African RIR abuse controls while appearing to be in Africa to geo-restricted services.

This is the same infrastructure-laundering pattern we documented in the Phantom ASN series: IPs that say one thing about where they are and another about where they actually live.

12. What the Map Tells Us

The mdrfckr botnet's infrastructure is not chosen. It is accumulated. It grows wherever security is weakest โ€” wherever passwords are unchanged, wherever VMs are forgotten, wherever abuse reports go unanswered. Its geographic distribution is a map of digital neglect:

๐Ÿข Cloud Failures (22%)
  • Default passwords on new VPS instances
  • Free-tier instances created and forgotten
  • Abuse departments that take weeks to act
  • Financial incentive to ignore mining
๐Ÿ  Telecom Victims (50%)
  • Home routers with SSH exposed
  • NAS devices with factory passwords
  • Business servers with "temp" credentials
  • No abuse response infrastructure
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Abuse-Tolerant Hosting (15%)
  • Yisu Cloud, UCloud, CognetCloud
  • Chinese-origin, Southeast Asian deployment
  • Regulatory arbitrage between jurisdictions
  • Slow/absent abuse response
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Institutional Neglect (13%)
  • Tanzania education network
  • Pakistani national telecom (NTC)
  • Caribbean wireless providers
  • Grant-funded, never maintained

The botnet operator doesn't need to rent servers. They don't need bulletproof hosting for their scanning nodes. They just need the internet to continue being the internet โ€” a network where root:password opens doors that should never have existed.

The only infrastructure the operator actually controls is one IRC server at FranTech. Everything else is theft. And the victims โ€” from Microsoft Azure to Tanzanian universities โ€” cannot or will not stop it.
