Psychz Networks + MULTACOM Corporation: Two LA Providers, One Botnet, Zero Accountability
Executive Summary
South of downtown Los Angeles, two data center companies โ Psychz Networks (AS40676) and MULTACOM Corporation (AS35916) โ operate from the same city, sell the same services, and feed the same botnet. Between them, they contribute 67 IPs to our threat intelligence database with abuse scores of 100 across the board. Every high-threat IP from both providers belongs to the same HASSH campaign documented in 032A: hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10, the 628-IP libssh2 scanner network spanning 48 countries.
Psychz Networks contributes 34 nodes to this botnet; MULTACOM contributes 26. Combined with ColoCrossing's 33 from 032A, these three US providers alone supply 93 of the campaign's 628 IPs โ nearly 15% of a global attack network, all from American soil.
I. Psychz Networks (AS40676): The Content Provider
Psychz Networks, founded in Los Angeles, is classified as a "Content" network type on PeeringDB โ meaning it operates primarily as a content delivery and hosting provider. It runs 2,000 IPv4 prefixes with an open peering policy. The PeeringDB listing shows a professional operation with its own IRR record (AS-40676).
The registrant breakdown is remarkably clean โ almost everything is registered directly to Psychz:
| RDAP Registrant | IPs | Avg Threat | Honeypot Hits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Psychz Networks | 33 | 60.9 | 330 |
| RIPE-NCC-HM-MNT | 2 | 62.5 | 0 |
| William Lu | 1 | 15.0 | 0 |
Unlike ColoCrossing, which hides behind the RackNerd reseller layer, Psychz owns its abuse directly. 33 of 36 IPs are registered to Psychz Networks itself โ no reseller intermediary, no third-party to blame. The abuse runs through their own customer portal.
The 208.87.242.x Cluster
Psychz Networks' most dangerous IPs cluster in the 208.87.242.0/24 and 208.87.243.0/24 subnets. The top attacker โ 208.87.242.107 โ carries threat score 91 with 72 honeypot hits. Three more IPs in the same /24 (208.87.242.161, 208.87.242.183, 208.87.243.61, 208.87.243.125, 208.87.243.51) all score above 70. This is a concentrated abuse cluster within a small prefix range โ the kind of pattern that automated monitoring should catch within hours, not months.
II. MULTACOM Corporation (AS35916): The NSP with a Reseller Problem
MULTACOM Corporation, also Los Angeles-based, carries the Network Service Provider (NSP) classification on PeeringDB โ a step up from Psychz's "Content" type. Founded in 2005 (ARIN allocation date), it operates 1,000 IPv4 prefixes with transit service designation (AS-35916-TRANSIT). Its website at multacom.com presents standard dedicated server and colocation services.
The registrant breakdown reveals MULTACOM's own version of the reseller problem:
| RDAP Registrant | IPs | Avg Threat | Honeypot Hits |
|---|---|---|---|
| MULTACOM CORPORATION | 20 | 61.6 | 82 |
| Brander Group Inc. | 8 | 63.3 | 24 |
| (null) | 2 | 4.0 | 4 |
| CoreExpress | 1 | 22.4 | 0 |
Brander Group Inc. appears as MULTACOM's primary reseller โ 8 IPs at an average threat of 63.3, actually higher than MULTACOM's direct registrations. Like RackNerd on ColoCrossing, the reseller layer is more dangerous than the parent. This is the same structural pattern we documented in 032A, replicated on a different LA-based ASN.
III. One Botnet, Three Cities, Five Providers
The most powerful finding of TI-2026-032 so far: the hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 campaign โ 628 IPs using libssh2_1.11.0 across 48 countries โ is not a loose correlation. It is a single coordinated scanning operation that purchases infrastructure from multiple US providers simultaneously.
| Provider | ASN | City | IPs in Campaign | Top Threat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OVH | 16276 | Roubaix, FR | 45 | โ |
| SingleHop/Internap | 32475 | Chicago, IL | 39 | โ |
| Psychz Networks | 40676 | Los Angeles, CA | 34 | 91 |
| ColoCrossing/HostPapa | 36352 | Buffalo, NY | 33 | 99 |
| MULTACOM | 35916 | Los Angeles, CA | 26 | 86 |
Three US providers โ ColoCrossing, Psychz, MULTACOM โ together supply 93 nodes (14.8%) of a 628-IP global botnet. The operator buys infrastructure across all three simultaneously, using the same SSH client library (libssh2_1.11.0) with the same HASSH fingerprint. This is procurement diversification โ the botnet operator distributes nodes across providers to ensure resilience if one provider suspends accounts.
The Strategic Geography
Buffalo (ColoCrossing), Los Angeles (Psychz + MULTACOM), with OVH in France and SingleHop in Chicago. The botnet operator has chosen providers on three continents with infrastructure in at least four US cities. This is not random โ it is deliberate geographic distribution for latency optimization and takedown resistance. If MULTACOM suspends accounts in LA, the Buffalo and Chicago nodes continue scanning.
IV. The LA Hosting Strip
Los Angeles has become America's secondary data center corridor (after Northern Virginia). The city's position on the Pacific Rim, its submarine cable landings, and its proximity to Asian markets make it a natural hub. But it also creates a concentration of hosting providers operating with minimal oversight.
Within LA County alone, our threat intelligence database tracks abuse from:
- Psychz Networks (AS40676) โ 36 IPs, avg threat 59.7
- MULTACOM Corporation (AS35916) โ 31 IPs, avg threat 57.0
- QuadraNet/DMIT (AS54600) โ additional LA-based provider in our data
- RackNerd LLC โ headquartered in LA, reselling on ColoCrossing from Buffalo
RackNerd is the connection point: headquartered in Los Angeles, reselling infrastructure from ColoCrossing in Buffalo. The LA hosting strip doesn't just generate local abuse โ it exports operational management to data centers across the country.
V. The Top Attacker Profiles
| IP | Provider | Threat | Hits | Registrant | Campaign |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 208.87.242.107 | Psychz | 91 | 72 | Psychz Networks | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
| 74.48.69.130 | MULTACOM | 86 | 24 | MULTACOM CORP | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
| 142.171.240.236 | MULTACOM | 85 | 12 | MULTACOM CORP | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
| 74.48.105.66 | MULTACOM | 84 | 36 | MULTACOM CORP | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
| 208.87.243.61 | Psychz | 83 | 66 | Psychz Networks | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
| 108.181.2.243 | Psychz | 82 | 24 | Psychz Networks | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 + 3ccd1778 |
| 208.87.242.161 | Psychz | 81 | 24 | Psychz Networks | hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 |
Note IP 108.181.2.243 from Psychz โ it belongs to two campaigns simultaneously: hassh-14b2ddda386a4d10 AND hassh-3ccd1778a7604972. This IP is either multi-tenant (shared hosting with multiple malicious customers) or the operator runs different tools from the same server. Either way, it represents a node at the intersection of two distinct attack campaigns.
VI. The Brander Group Connection
On MULTACOM's AS35916, Brander Group Inc. registers 8 IPs โ all at threat โฅ 60, all in the same botnet campaign. This mirrors the RackNerd pattern from 032A: a reseller operating on the parent's infrastructure, with the reseller's IPs being more dangerous than the parent's direct registrations.
The pattern is now established across two distinct providers:
| Parent | Reseller | Reseller IPs | Reseller Avg Threat | Parent Avg Threat | Delta |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ColoCrossing/HostPapa | RackNerd LLC | 30 | 55.6 | 36.6 | +52% |
| MULTACOM | Brander Group Inc. | 8 | 63.3 | 61.6 | +3% |
The reseller layer always carries higher threat than the parent. This is structural: resellers compete on price, not security. The cheaper the hosting, the fewer questions asked at sign-up.
VII. The 100% Problem
Across both Psychz Networks and MULTACOM, every single tracked IP with threat โฅ 50 has an AbuseIPDB score of 100. This is the maximum possible abuse score โ meaning every single IP has been reported by multiple independent parties as actively malicious.
An abuse score of 100 is not a false positive. It requires multiple independent reports from different observers, verified through AbuseIPDB's validation pipeline. When an entire ASN's high-threat population carries 100% abuse scores, it means:
- The abuse is real and widely observed
- Multiple parties have reported it
- The provider has either not received or not acted on the reports
- The infrastructure remains operational despite universal abuse flagging
VIII. The Conspiratorial Reading
Read Between the Lines
Why are Psychz and MULTACOM in the same botnet?
Both providers are in Los Angeles. Both have open peering policies. Both have nearly identical abuse profiles. The same botnet operator purchases infrastructure from both simultaneously. Is this because the botnet operator finds both providers equally permissive? Or is there a business relationship between the two that makes cross-purchasing convenient? PeeringDB shows they likely peer with each other at LA exchanges.
What is the RIPE-NCC-HM-MNT entry doing on a US provider?
Two Psychz IPs are registered to "RIPE-NCC-HM-MNT" โ the RIPE NCC's default maintainer object. RIPE is the European IP registry. Why are RIPE-managed IPs appearing on a Los Angeles-based ASN? This suggests IP block transfers or leases from European allocations โ the same cross-registry pattern we documented with PIO-Hosting in the German-Dutch investigations.
Who is Brander Group Inc.?
Eight IPs, average threat 63.3, all in the same botnet. A shell company? A legitimate reseller? The name appears nowhere in previous investigations. But its pattern is identical to RackNerd on ColoCrossing โ a named entity interposed between the botnet and the infrastructure provider, creating a liability buffer.
The $26.88/year question, version 2.0
If RackNerd sells VPS at $2.24/month ($26.88/year), what does Psychz charge? Their dedicated servers start at higher price points โ but the economics of abuse remain the same. A server running 72 SSH brute-force sessions costs a few hundred dollars per year. The revenue from whatever the compromised credentials unlock vastly exceeds the infrastructure cost. These LA providers are cost centers for criminal operations, not profit centers.
IX. Conclusions
Psychz Networks and MULTACOM Corporation demonstrate that ColoCrossing is not an outlier โ it is a pattern. Los Angeles hosting providers participate in the same 628-IP botnet as the Buffalo server farm, using the same SSH client fingerprint, targeting the same honeypot infrastructure. The difference is geographic: Buffalo is a rust belt city trying to become a tech hub; LA is already one.
After two letters of TI-2026-032, we have documented 141 IPs across three US providers, all feeding the same global attack campaign. The botnet operator treats American hosting like a utility โ commodity infrastructure purchased in bulk from multiple vendors. The providers, in turn, treat abuse reports like administrative overhead.
Next: the provider with the highest average threat score of any US company in our database โ SingleHop/Internap Holding at 70.5.
